I Used to Think Doing Everything Myself Was a Strength. I Was Wrong.
At Sunshine Academy, everything we create, whether it’s a course, an animation, or a resource for families and professionals, is built with purpose. We’re trying to make something that matters to parents, teachers, and the children at the heart of it all.
But building meaningful work can be demanding. It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that the best way to keep everything “right” is to hold on tightly and do it all yourself. I know this because I did exactly that for a long time.
Control Isn’t the Same as Strength
When I first started creating content for the Academy, I wanted to build everything myself. Every asset. Every scene. Every decision.
I told myself it was because I cared, and I did. But underneath that was a quieter truth: I felt more in control if I did it all. And control, I thought, was strength.
But over time, I learned something very different. When you try to do everything alone, you create a ceiling not just for yourself but for everyone around you.
It doesn’t happen all at once. It creeps in slowly. A long project here, a tight deadline there, and eventually you find yourself stretched thin and creatively stuck. You stop giving others the space to bring their ideas forward.
The Real Weight of Doing It All
When you’re the only one holding everything together, three things inevitably happen:
You get tired. Even passion has limits.
The work slows down. No matter how efficient you are, one person can’t match the capacity of a team.
No one else gets the chance to grow. And that means the work, and the people, can’t reach their full potential.
This was a difficult truth for me to accept. For a long time, I equated “ownership” with doing every single thing myself. But what I was actually doing was holding things back.
Letting Go is Part of the Work
The shift didn’t happen overnight. It came in small steps.
I started using pre-made assets rather than building everything from scratch. I shared creative direction instead of keeping it all to myself. I trusted other people with parts of the process, and slowly, I saw the change.
The work became lighter. Faster. And most importantly, better.
Because trust isn’t separate from the creative process, it’s a core part of it. It’s how ideas grow beyond the limits of one person’s imagination.
Trusting Others Is Also Leadership
This isn’t just about creative work; it’s about leadership.
When you lead a team, trying to do everything yourself isn’t a sign of dedication, it’s a bottleneck. Trusting others isn’t stepping away. It’s giving people the space to step up.
Some of the best ideas we’ve produced at Sunshine Academy have come from other people, sparks of insight that only emerged because there was room for them to try, experiment and contribute.
Stepping Back Doesn’t Mean Stepping Away
I’ll always be hands-on with the creative side. It’s something I love and always will. But I’ve learned that stepping back doesn’t mean losing control, it means sharing it.
And when you share it, everyone grows: the team, the work, and you as a leader.
If you’ve ever found yourself clinging tightly to a process, I understand that feeling. It’s hard to let go. But sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do isn’t to hold on tighter, it’s to trust someone else to create too.
Because in the end, trust isn’t a weakness. It’s what allows good work to become great.
Why This Lesson Matters Beyond the Creative Work
This idea of trust doesn’t just live inside creative teams. It matters across the whole of the SEND landscape.
The most powerful change happens when parents, educators, and professionals trust one another, when we stop trying to control every part of the process and start sharing it.
For families, that might mean trusting that schools want to support their child. For professionals, it might mean listening and recognising that parents are experts in their children.
When everyone steps back just enough to make space for someone else’s voice, that’s where real collaboration happens. And that’s when children get what they truly need.
For me, learning to trust hasn’t just changed the way I work. It’s changed how I lead, and how I see the power of working together.
