Returning to School After Christmas: Supporting SEND Children Through Excitement and Overwhelm

The return to school after Christmas can be a challenging time for many families. After weeks of festive excitement, changed routines, and time away from school, the transition back to everyday life can feel sudden and overwhelming. For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), this adjustment can be particularly difficult.

Christmas often brings a welcome break from the usual structure of school life. Bedtimes shift, routines soften, and expectations change. While this can be enjoyable, it can also take a toll. When January arrives and school routines return, many SEND children are expected to quickly switch back into learning mode before they’ve fully processed the change.

Post-Christmas Overwhelm in SEND Children

In the lead up to Christmas, school environments often become busier and louder. Timetables change, special events are added, and social demands increase. Some children cope well during this time, while others hold themselves together until the pressure eases. When school resumes after the holidays, the emotional and sensory impact of Christmas may still be lingering.

Parents often notice the signs first. A child may struggle to get up in the morning, feel anxious about returning to school, or show increased emotional reactions. Some children become withdrawn, while others express their distress through behaviour. This post-Christmas overwhelm is common, especially for neurodivergent children who rely on routine and predictability to feel safe.

Balancing Excitement and Anxiety

It’s important to recognise that children can feel excited about Christmas and still struggle with the return to school. Missing friends doesn’t always mean feeling ready for the classroom. Enjoying the holidays doesn’t guarantee an easy transition back to learning. These mixed emotions are part of the adjustment process and do not mean a child is failing.

For many SEND families, the weeks after Christmas are about rebuilding routine gently. This might include earlier bedtimes, clear expectations, visual schedules, or extra reassurance. Supporting SEND children during this period often means prioritising emotional safety before academic progress.

Supporting the Return to School After the Holidays

The return to school doesn’t need to happen all at once. Small steps can make a big difference. Gentle mornings, reduced pressure, and time to settle back into familiar routines can help children feel more secure. Some children benefit from talking about how they’re feeling, while others need space and calm.

Normal life does return, but it doesn’t have to arrive immediately. For SEND children, adjusting after Christmas is a process, not a moment. If things feel harder than expected, that doesn’t mean something is wrong. It simply means your child is finding their way back after a very full and demanding season.

A Gentle Reminder for SEND Families

At Sunshine Academy, we understand that returning to school after Christmas can look different for every SEND family. Some children settle quickly, while others need time, patience, and understanding. Wherever you are in that journey, you’re not alone. By moving at a pace that feels manageable and responding to your child’s needs, you’re already offering the support that matters most.
