School Avoidance Awareness Week 2025 – A Week of Learning and Support

At Sunshine Support, we are proud to once again host our annual School Avoidance Awareness Week (SAAW) at the end of September. Now in its third year, this week is a dedicated opportunity for parents, carers, and professionals to explore the complex world of school avoidance.

School avoidance is not just a refusal to attend school—it is often a sign of deep emotional distress. Children who avoid school can experience significant anxiety, low self-esteem, and feelings of isolation. If not addressed with understanding and care, school avoidance can leave lasting impacts on their emotional well-being, academic progress, and social development. It is therefore crucial to meet children where they are, to listen to their experiences, and work with them to rebuild their confidence and sense of safety. Simply pushing a child to attend without recognising their needs can exacerbate the situation and even cause trauma. Supporting a child through school avoidance is about understanding their perspective, validating their feelings, and guiding them gently towards re-engagement at a pace that feels manageable.

Our mission is to change the narrative around “school refusal,” looking at the bigger picture rather than forcing attendance through pressure or threats. By creating compassionate, informed strategies, we can help children regain their confidence and resilience, ensuring they feel heard and supported throughout the process.
