When Education Looks Different: Understanding EOTIS (and EOTAS)

There are moments in a child’s journey where it becomes clear that something isn’t working.

Not just a difficult week.
Not just a phase.

But a deeper recognition that the way education is currently being delivered doesn’t quite fit the child in front of you.

For some families, this is where conversations around EOTIS - Education Other Than In School - begin.

You may also hear it referred to as EOTAS (Education Other Than At School), a term that has been more widely used in recent years. While the language may be evolving, the principle remains the same:

Education should be shaped around the child - not the other way around.

What Is EOTIS?

EOTIS is a form of educational provision where a child’s needs are met outside of a traditional school setting.

It is not about removing education.
It is about redefining how education is delivered, so that it works for the individual child.

This might include:

one-to-one teaching
therapeutic support
community-based learning
a personalised timetable
a combination of different approaches

At its core, EOTIS is one of the most bespoke and individualised educational packages available.

It’s Not Defined by One Path

EOTIS is often spoken about alongside school avoidance or attendance difficulties.

And for some children, that is part of the story.

But it is not the whole story.

Children may require EOTIS for a range of reasons, including:

complex needs that cannot be met in a school environment
sensory challenges
medical or mental health needs
the cumulative impact of unmet need over time
or a combination of many factors

Every situation is different.

And that’s exactly the point.

EOTIS exists because there isn’t one single path that works for every child.

When the System Needs to Flex

For many families, reaching this point can feel significant.

There are often conversations, attempts to adapt support, and a gradual understanding that something more tailored is needed.

This can involve working with schools, local authorities, and professionals to explore what provision is appropriate.

It’s not always a straightforward process.

And it’s not always a quick one.

But at its heart, the conversation is about one key question:

What does this child need in order to access education in a meaningful way?

Understanding Before Action

Because EOTIS is so individual, understanding is key.

Understanding:

the child’s needs
what has and hasn’t worked
what support might look like moving forward

This is where many parents find themselves needing clear, grounded information — not just about the system, but about how it applies to their child.

Across the Academy, many of our webinars explore these wider SEND systems and pathways, helping parents feel more confident in understanding what options exist and how to approach them.

What EOTIS Can Look Like Day to Day

One of the most important things to understand about EOTIS is that it doesn’t look the same for every child.

For some, it may involve structured academic learning in a quieter environment.

For others, it may include therapeutic input as a core part of the day.

For some children, learning may happen in shorter, more manageable periods.

And for others, it may be about rebuilding confidence in learning altogether.

It is not a reduced version of education.

It is a restructured version of education.

Moving Away from “Where” to “How”

Traditional education often focuses on where learning happens.

EOTIS shifts that focus to how learning happens.

  • How a child engages
  • How they feel safe
  • How they process information
  • How they build confidence over time

This shift can be powerful.

Because when the approach changes, the experience of learning can begin to change too.

You’re Not Alone in This

If you are beginning to hear terms like EOTIS or EOTAS, it can feel unfamiliar.

And at times, it can feel like you’re stepping into a part of the system that is harder to understand.

But you are not alone in that.

Many families reach this point after trying different approaches and recognising that their child needs something different.

And while the path may not look typical, it is still a valid and supported form of education.

A Different Way Forward

EOTIS is not about stepping away from education.

It’s about stepping toward an approach that works.

For parents who want to understand this more — whether that’s the legal framework, how provision is built, or what it can look like in practice — having access to clear, supportive information, can make a real difference.

Across Sunshine Academy, we continue to explore these topics through webinars, discussions, and shared experiences, helping families feel more confident navigating pathways that don’t always come with a clear map.

A Final Thought

There is no single way for education to look.

And there is no single version of success.

For some children, the path forward will look different.

And sometimes, that difference is exactly what makes it work.
